White leads Fever past Mystics
Jul 1, 2007 - 11:09 PM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Washington Mystics threw everything at Tamika Catchings. That didn't prevent reserve guard Tan White from picking up the slack and leading the Indiana Fever to a 69-62 victory that ended the Mystics' three-game winning streak Sunday.
Catchings, who was double-teamed for much of the game, and White finished with 14 points apiece. White also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds.
White scored 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting in 15 minutes off the bench in the first half. Her opportunity came when Ann DeForge got into early foul trouble.
The Mystics twice got within 10 points of Indiana, but DeForge responded with 3-pointers for her only six points of the game.
The Fever also played solid defense in the physical contest and limited its opponent to less than 40 percent shooting for the 10th consecutive game - a WNBA record.
Indiana center Tamika Whitmore had 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting, four rebounds and three steals.
Guard Alana Beard led Washington with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Beard's consecutive 3-pointers and a layup got Washington within 63-58 with 1:30 remaining. After Catchings made two free throws at the other end, Washington guard Nikki Blue was fouled while making a layup.
DeLisha Milton-Jones rebounded Blue's missed free throw and was immediately fouled. Milton-Jones made both free throws that got the Mystics within 65-62 with 38.7 seconds left.
After Whitmore's layup made it 67-62, White made two free throws with 13.1 seconds left to seal the victory.
