Fowles rallies Sky past Silver Stars, 75-72

Jul 25, 2010 - 3:20 AM SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Sylvia Fowles had 23 points and 12 rebounds, andthe Chicago Sky overcame an eight-point deficit in the final 3:10 to beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 75-72 on Saturday night.

Jia Perkins scored 15 points for the Sky (12-12), who have won four of their last five.

The Silver Stars led 70-64 when Chicago called a timeout with 3:37 left. Chamique Holdsclaw's layup extended the San Antonio lead to 72-64, but the Sky regrouped and scored the game's final 11 points.

"We were able to come out of that timeout and kind of fix some defensive possessions that we were letting get away from us," Perkins said. "They got a lot of easy looks on offense, so once we stopped that we were able to execute our offense."

Perkins' fastbreak layup tied the score at 72-all with 1:15 left. After the Silver Stars missed two shots, Perkins hit a jumper in the lane off a pick-and-roll to give Chicago (12-12) its first lead in the fourth quarter.

Michelle Snow missed a short shot in traffic on the Silver Stars' next possession, and Shay Murphy hit a free throw to put the Sky up three with 15.6 seconds remaining.

Roneeka Hodges missed a potential tying 3 and Fowles grabbed the rebound as time expired.

"What was going through my head (during the last 3:10) was, 'We've got to get some stops and get scores,' " said Fowles, who had her fourth straight double-double and 11th overall. "At that point, they were getting what they wanted on the inside and doing what they wanted on the outside. My whole mindset just changed. We came too far to come here and lose, so we had to do something."

Snow and Hodges finished with 13 points each to lead the Silver Stars (8-14), who squandered a fourth-quarter lead for the second straight home game.

"It was a missed opportunity," said Holdsclaw, who scored eight of her 10 points in the final period. "We know they're going to go to Fowles to make plays. I wasn't aware of the clock when (Becky) Hammon kicked it out (with 41.9 seconds left) and I took a shot. We could've had it back to center court to have another play. So it was a couple of mental mistakes. This one hurts. We had this game in our hands."

Chicago scored the game's first six points, but with Hammon scoring eight poits in the first quarter, the Silver Stars chipped away and carried a 22-20 lead into the second period. Hammon was held scoreless the rest of the game.

Snow and backup center Jayne Appel combined for 12 points in the second quarter as the Silver Stars upped their lead to nine before taking a 40-35 advantage at halftime. Appel finished with a career-high 11 points.

All five starters scored in a 14-2 Chicago run to open the third period. But three 3-pointers from Hodges highlighted a quarter-ending rally that sent the Silver Stars into the fourth period up 60-58.
