Young, Hammon lead Silver Stars to OT win
Jun 25, 2011 - 2:38 AM San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Sophia Young and Becky Hammon each scored six points in overtime, helping San Antonio to a 90-80 win over the Los Angeles Sparks.Jia Perkins went 13-of-18 from the field for 31 points and Hammon totaled 22 points and nine assists for the Silver Stars, who bounced back from their first loss of the season, to Phoenix on Tuesday.
Young had 12 points, while Ruth Riley contributed 11 points and nine rebounds for the winners.
Candace Parker ended with 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Sparks, who had a three-game winning streak broken. They missed all seven of their overtime field goal attempts.
A steal from Ebony Hoffman with just over two minutes left in OT gave the Sparks a chance to tie, but Kristi Toliver missed a short jumper. Young came back and nailed a step-back jumper, and Hammon added another bucket with a minute remaining to expand the difference to 86-80.
Hammon's three-pointer with 33.4 seconds left in regulation forced the extra session. She had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but missed a shot.
