Phoenix wins 12th straight with rout of Sun
Jul 18, 2014 - 4:13 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Penny Taylor scored 23 points and Brittney Griner added 21, as the Phoenix Mercury extended their season-high winning streak to 12 games with a 101-85 decision over the Connecticut Sun.Diana Taurasi and Candice Dupree each scored 14 in the final game for both teams before the All-Star break. The All-Star Game will be held at US Airways Center Saturday afternoon.
Phoenix, which shot 53.5 percent from the field, hasn't lost since June 12 at Connecticut. The Mercury improved to a 10-1 at home and a league-best 18-3 overall, and got revenge in the only other 2014 meeting against the Sun.
Katie Douglas tallied 23 points and Alex Bentley had 20 for the Sun. Chiney Ogwumike scored 14 to go with 10 rebounds for Connecticut, which has dropped four of its last five games.
Erin Phillips scored the final six points of the opening quarter to increase Phoenix's lead to 24-14. The spread was 51-39 at the half, and the Mercury capitalized on Connecticut mistakes. Phoenix held a 15-0 lead in points off turnovers by the break.
Connecticut was within five nearly midway through the third, but the Sun moved the margin to 76-61 going to the fourth. The difference was as high as 21 down the stretch.
