Sky outlast Dream in OT
Jun 24, 2015 - 7:47 PM Rosemont, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Elena Delle Donne poured in 45 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, leading the Chicago Sky to a 100-96 overtime victory over the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday afternoon at Allstate Arena.Cappie Pondexter chipped in 19 points and Allie Quigley added 16 for the Sky, who have won two straight and three of their last four. They also prevailed in overtime four days ago at San Antonio in their last outing.
Angel McCoughtry scored 34 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which has dropped two straight and four of its last five. Sancho Lyttle contributed 15 points and 10 boards in defeat, while Roneeka Hodges also scored 15.
Quigley opened the extra period with a bucket for Chicago and the Sky never trailed again. The Dream missed their first five shots in overtime and the Sky sealed the contest at the line.
Della Donne made each of her eight tries from the stripe in overtime and finished a perfect 19-of-19 at the line for the contest. Chicago missed just two of its 36 free throw attempts overall.
The Sky appeared to be in cruise control with a 65-48 cushion late in the third quarter. Chicago led 69-57 entering the fourth, but Atlanta stormed back and took an 81-80 lead on a pair of free throws by Matee Ajavon.
Pondexter made the second of two free throws for an 86-84 Chicago lead with 26.2 seconds to play, but a driving layup by McCoughtry in the closing seconds forced overtime.
Atlanta opened an 11-4 lead early in the contest, but Chicago answered with the next six. The Dream carried a 19-17 edge into the second, but the Sky scored the first nine of the period for a 26-19 advantage. Chicago led by as many as 11 in the stanza and took a 40-34 lead to the intermission.
