AHL team bus involved in accident

Feb 19, 2009 - 9:04 PM PITTSFIELD, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- Four members of the Albany River Rats and a team radio broadcaster remain hospitalized after the American Hockey League team's bus rolled over on an icy Massachusetts highway Thursday morning.

The five people injured were identified as team members Joe Jensen, Nicholas Blanchard, Casey Borer, Jonathan Paiement and commentator John Hennessy.

None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

"The Albany River Rats organization has been in the thoughts and prayers of the extended American Hockey League family throughout the day," AHL president David Andrews said. "We are thankful that the injured players and staff have been in good hands at Berkshire Medical Center, and clearly at this time the primary concern in terms of our schedule is the well-being of the Albany players and coaches. All of our teams offer their support and assistance in any way possible."

The bus transporting the AHL team from a game in Lowell struck a guard rail roughly at 3:20 a.m. EST on Interstate 90.

The bus rolled onto its side before coming to rest across the left travel lane and median.

Albany's game Friday night against Bridgeport has been rescheduled for March 31. The River Rats are the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes.
