Peterson fails drug test, rematch with Khan called off

May 10, 2012 - 12:07 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Lamont Peterson failed a drug test, causing the cancellation of his May 19 scheduled rematch against Amir Khan for the WBA and IBF junior welterweight belts.

Khan took to Twitter to relay his displeasure.

"The fight is off! sorry everyone the only person to blame is @kingpete26 I'll be looking for a opponent to fight June 30th," he said.

Peterson's failed drug test was administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA). He reportedly tested positive for synthetic testosterone.

The World Boxing Association ordered a rematch after Khan lost a split decision to Peterson on December 10 in Washington D.C.

Referee Joe Cooper unjustifiably chopped two points off Khan's scorecard during the fight for excessive pushing, and also failed to credit Khan with a knockdown in the first round.

The WBA, citing those injustices as well as the appearance of unauthorized individual at ringside who apparently influenced the judges, demanded a rematch take place within 180 days.

Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KOs) is a native of the nation's capital, while Khan (26-2, 18 KOs) hails from England.
