Mayweather takes unanimous decision over Guerrero

May 5, 2013 - 4:57 AM Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Floyd Mayweather remained unbeaten with a unanimous decision over Robert Guerrero to retain his WBC Welterweight Belt on Saturday night.

The 36-year-old Mayweather (44-0) took a 117-111 score from all three judges over the 30-year-old contender Guerrero (31-2-1)

Using footwork and counters to keep Guerrero at bay and off-balance, Mayweather got the first solid punch of the fight when he caught Guerrero in the face with a straight right.

In the sixth, Guerrero continued to attack and got a couple of body blows in on Mayweather, but Mayweather connected on another solid right to the face later in the round.

Guerrero had a strong seventh round as he connected on a lot of punches, but was still unable to get anything solid in as Mayweather used his superior speed to avoid the big hit.

In the eighth, Mayweather came around with a big right hook that landed squarely on the left eye of Guerrero.

For the rest of the fight, Mayweather played defense with a comfortable lead and a decent left hook to the head of Guerrero in the 11th round put the highlight on the victory.

In the undercard, unbeaten Abner Mares (26-0) of Mexico defeated compatriot Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-5) with a ninth-round TKO to win the WBC Featherweight championship.

Mares knocked Ponce De Leon down with a left hook in the second round, then put him on the mat again in the ninth. After rising, Mares had Ponce De Leon on the ropes and was tagging him with rights until the referee stopped the fight at 2:20.
