Independiente edges Gimnasia La Plata 1-0
Nov 7, 2009 - 4:45 AM BUENOS AIRES, Argentina(AP) -- Eduardo Tuzzio scored a late goal to give Independiente a 1-0 win over Gimnasia La Plata in Friday's opening matches of Round 13 in the Argentine Apertura tournament.Argentinos Juniors drew 1-1 with Rosario Central in the day*s other league match.
Banfield currently tops the table with 26 points, ahead of Newell's Old Boys on goal difference.
Independiente moved to within three points of the leaders when Tuzzio finally broke through the Gimnasia defense in the 87th minute at the Libertadores de America stadium and headed in a Patricio Rodriguez corner.
Rosario Central took the lead over Argentinos Juniors when Emilio Zelaya applied the finish to an incisive passing move in the 16th minute.
Rosario defender Nahuel Valentini was sent off for a second yellow card just ten minutes later and Nicolas Pavlovich equalized for the home side in the 41st, converting a right wing cross at the second attempt.
The Apertura tournament continues through the weekend. On Saturday it's: Lanus-Chacarita Juniors; Godoy Cruz-Racing Club; Newell*s Old Boys-River Plate and Atletico Tucuman-Tigre.
On Sunday it's: San Lorenzo-Banfield; Estudiantes La Plata-Velez Sarsfield and Boca Juniors-Colon de Santa Fe. Round 13 concludes Monday with Huracan against Arsenal de Sarandi.
