LPGA event in Bahamas cut to 54 holes
May 23, 2013 - 12:46 AM Paradise Island, Bahamas (Sports Network) - The inaugural Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic was cut to 54 holes on Wednesday, a day before the event was to begin. On Tuesday, the Ocean Club Golf Course at Atlantis took on close to a foot of rain in an eight-hour period starting at 3 p.m. local time.
According to the LPGA Tour, there was standing water on at least seven holes with the ninth and 18th fairways completely flooded.
The first and second round pairings will remain the same, but they will be played on Friday and Saturday.
"The damage to the golf course and structures caused by Tuesday's heavy rain and winds was extensive and we are working around the clock to repair damages and drain the golf course so that we can present a first-class event for the LPGA, Pure Silk and the people of the Bahamas," said tournament director Matt Truax. "We thank everyone for their understanding and patience while we do everything possible to return Ocean Club Golf Course to championship condition."
There is a chance of rain on Wednesday and Thursday as well. Wednesday's pro- am was canceled, but the LPGA set up a Q&A session with several players, including Inbee Park, Stacy Lewis and Suzann Pettersen, the top three ranked players in the world.
This is the 12th time an LPGA Tour event was shortened to 54 holes by weather. The last time it happened was at the 2010 Bell Micro LPGA Classic in Alabama.
