PONTE VEDRA, Florida (Ticker) -- The unlikely leader after 54 holes, Paul Goydos remained in front at the turn despite a shaky start in Sunday's final round at the Players Championship.
Goydos had three bogeys and a birdie over his first nine holes to fall to 5-under, but he maintained his one-shot lead over Kenny Perry, who also played the front nine at 2-over.
With extremely strong winds wreaking havoc on the course, just five players shot under par in Sunday's round, with an average score of 75.
American Briny Baird was among the few players having success with the conditions, making birdies on the third and seventh hole to move into a tie for third place at 3-under. Baird has not made a bogey through his 12 holes.
Sergio Garcia also was in contention at 3-under through nine holes, while Canada's Stephen Ames and Jeff Quinney were at 2-under.
The 43-year-old Goydos has only two career victories on the PGA Tour, including last year's Sony Open in Hawaii.
Perry is seeking to end a 68-event drought without a victory, with his last title coming at the Bank of America Colonial in 2005.
First prize is $1.62 million.
