GREENSBORO, North Carolina (Ticker) - Carl Pettersson had a tenuous one-stroke lead halfway through the final round at the $5.1 million Wyndham Championship on Sunday.
Pettersson picked up two birdies on the front nine at Sedgefield to improve to 21-under, but he could not shake off the persistent Scott McCarron, who gathered three birdies before the turn.
It appeared to be a two-man race, with J.J. Henry in third place, back in the clubhouse at 16-under 264 after a 62 that included eight birdies.
Pettersson, a Swede, is playing for more than his third PGA Tour victory. He also has an eye on making the European Ryder Cup team, with only two more weeks before the line-up is finalized.
Even if he wins here, Pettersson will not be an automatic selection, unless he has another strong showing next week, but he would be a contender for one of Nick Faldo's two captain's picks.
