Third round of Schwab Championship suspended

Nov 2, 2008 - 2:35 AM SONOMA, California (Ticker) -- Andy Bean still sits atop the leaderboard at the Charles Schwab Championship after Saturday's third round was suspended for the day by rain.

Bean got in four holes in his third round at the $2.5 million event before play was halted for the day. He recorded four pars and has a two-stroke lead at 10-under-par.

The third round is scheduled to be resumed on Sunday morning at 7:15 a.m. PST. The fourth round will start at 10:50 a.m. local time.

Bean, whose only win this season came at the Regions Charity Classic in May, will have a two-stroke lead over John Cook when play resumes on Sunday.

"If we get any drying of the golf course tonight and tomorrow morning we still should be able to get a 72-hole golf tournament in," tournament director Brian Claar said. "If it's not playable at 7:15 a.m. we'll have to re-evaluate and look at other options."

Cook feels those other options will likely include a Monday finish.

"I'm looking at a Monday finish, actually, if they want to get 72 in. They'll probably have to do that," Cook said.

Cook was 2-under through six before the rains came and at 8-under for the tournament.

The Schwab Cup will be decided at the end of this event but, with just 796 points, Bean has no shot at overtaking leader Jay Haas (2,556).

The winner of this event is awarded 844 points.

Haas, who holds a 12-point lead over Fred Funk in the Schwab Cup standings, was 4-over through eight and in a tie for 14th at 2-under.

First prize is $440,000.
