Captaintreacherous rallies to win North America Cup

Jun 16, 2013 - 2:48 AM Campbellville, ON (Sports Network) - Champion pacer Captaintreacherous, driven by Tim Tetrick, rallied down the stretch to capture Saturday's 30th edition of the $1 million North America Cup at Mohawk Racetrack.

Captaintreacherous, the 7-5 favorite in the 10-horse field, left from post 4 but trailed pacesetter Fool Me Once in the mile pace. The favorite, trained by Tony Alagna, finally got going down the stretch and was able to post a 1 1/2- length victory over 95-1 longshot Twilight Bonfire.

Finishing third was Wake Up Peter followed by 4-1 third pick Fool Me Once, Sunshine Beach, Captive Audience, 3-1 second choice Vegas Vacation, Martini Hanover, Odds On Equuleus and Apprentice Hanover.

The time for the North America Cup was 1:48 3/5, a career best for the winning colt.

Captaintreacherous picked up $500,000 with the win as he remains perfect in three starts this year. Overall, the 3-year-old colt has won 11 of 13 career starts for $1,467,570.

Owned by Captaintreacherous Racing, last year's champion 2-year-old male pacer and Pacer of the Year won his North America elimination race last Saturday by a half-length in 1:48 4/5. The other elimination winners were Vegas Vacation and Fool Me Once.

Captaintreacherous opened 2013 by winning a Pennsylvania Sires Stakes race at Pocono Downs on May 19. His 2012 season was highlighted by wins in the Metro Pace and Woodrow Wilson.

Captaintreacherous returned $4.80, $3.30 and $2.70. Twilight Bonfire paid $44.00 and $15.40, and Wake Up Peter paid $4.80 to show.
