Sieverts & Burke grab week one honors in MLL
May 1, 2012 - 5:44 PM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced its weekly award winners for the week ending April 29, 2012, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Denver Outlaws midfielder Jeremy Sieverts was named as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week while Boston Cannons goalkeeper Jordan Burke earned MLL Defensive Player of the Week honors.Sieverts scored four goals, including a pair of two-point markers, and added an assist as the Outlaws spoiled the Charlotte Hounds' Major League Lacrosse debut with a 21-12 decision at American Legion Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. While becoming the eighth player in Denver history to record more than one two- point goal in the same game, he led an Outlaws offense that matched a team record by scoring four two-point goals.
Sieverts, who was acquired in an off-season trade from the Chesapeake Bayhawks, had tallied just six points in his career prior to Saturday's seven-point performance.
It is the first time Sieverts has been named as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week in his career.
Meanwhile, Burke earned MLL Defensive Player of the Week honors for the fourth time in his MLL career after leading the defending MLL champion Cannons to a 15-3 victory over the Rochester Rattlers at Harvard Stadium. Burke, who led the MLL last year with a .615 save percentage, anchored a Boston defense that set an MLL record by allowing just three goals.
After allowing two quick goals in the opening 58 seconds, Burke held Rochester to just one goal while recording a league-high 17 saves.
The second week of the 2012 MLL season will take place on Saturday with three games on the schedule. The Cannons will host Charlotte at Harvard Stadium while the Ohio Machine opens its season against the Bayhawks at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Meanwhile, the Outlaws will open their home schedule by entertaining the Hamilton Nationals at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
