Brewers retain Macha for next season
Oct 4, 2009 - 7:27 PM ST. LOUIS(AP) -- Milwaukee Brewers manager Ken Macha will be back for a second season in 2010.General manager Doug Melvin announced before Sunday's season finale that Macha was being retained for the second season of the two-year contract he signed last October. The club holds an option for 2011.
"I'm fine with what happened," Macha said. "I told Doug to do whatever he thinks is best."
The Brewers began Sunday at 79-82, dragged down by injuries after making the playoffs last year. Outfielder Corey Hart (appendicitis) had an extended absence and second baseman Rickie Weeks was lost for the season with a wrist injury in May.
"He said, `It doesn't matter to me. I don't do this job for the money or the security of it. I manage because I enjoy it and I want to win ballgames,"' Melvin said. "I do think the option tells him that I do support him. I back him in his role as manager of this ballclub."
Interim pitching coach Chris Bosio and bullpen coach Stan Kyles will not be offered contracts at this time, the team said, but will be candidates for coaching positions in the organization. The Brewers have openings for a Triple-A pitching coach and advance scout.
Macha had a career record of 447-362 in five seasons, and won the AL West with the Athletics in 2003 and 2006.
