NEW YORK(AP) -- Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is likely headed for surgery to repair his torn right hamstring.
Reyes tried to come back after he was placed on the disabled list May 26 but felt discomfort while running during his rehabilitation work last Tuesday. An MRI showed a new tear.
Reyes batted .279 with two homers, 15 RBIs and 11 steals in 36 games this season.
Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon says the club is finalizing plans for Reyes and it's "looking like" he's going to have surgery.
Reyes' leg was one of a series of key injuries that sent the Mets spiraling to a 70-92 record and fourth-place finish in the NL East.
Wilpon made his remarks during a news conference Monday with general manager Omar Minaya.
