Yanks' Chamberlain has bullpen session pushed back
Mar 2, 2010 - 6:41 PM TAMPA, Fla.(AP) -- New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain had his bullpen session Tuesday pushed back by at least one day because of flulike symptoms. If Chamberlain can't take the mound Wednesday, he would likely have his first spring training appearance delayed.
"We have to see how he is," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
Chamberlain and Phil Hughes, who is set to start Friday against Tampa Bay, are the front-runners for the fifth spot in the rotation.
The World Series champions play their exhibition opener Wednesday against Pittsburgh. Chad Gaudin, Alfredo Aceves and Sergio Mitre, who are in the mix for the last spot in the rotation, are supposed to face the Pirates.
Three others in the fifth starter mix, Chad Gaudin, Alfredo Aceves and Sergio Mitre, will pitch in Wednesday's spring training opener with Pittsburgh.
With the games about to start, Girardi said he is not concerned about the latest off-the-field situation involving Alex Rodriguez.
On Tuesday, the All-Star third baseman said he has been contacted and will be interviewed by federal investigators regarding a Canadian doctor accused of selling an unapproved drug.
Dr. Anthony Galea is facing four charges in his country related to the drug known as Actovegin, which is extracted from calf's blood and used for healing. His assistant also has been charged in the U.S. for having HGH and another drug while crossing the border in September.
Girardi said he wasn't worried.
"No, I'm not," he said. "We'll just see what happens."
Rodriguez and his teammates went through a short workout before departing for Girardi's second annual team bonding trip away from the ballpark. The players and coaches took part in a competition of Indy Racing and arcade games at a local play center.
"We're looking for well-rounded video arcade nuts," Girardi said. "I think it's good to get the guys together away from the field. It's just a nice day to have in a big group. We've going at it pretty hard for a couple weeks and it's a chance for them to relax and have fun."
Last year the team had a billiards tournament. Other potential activities considered this year included paint ball, pingpong, bowling and a pool party.
"I think it's important to our club and what we're trying to do here," Girardi said. "We believe it's important."
NOTES: Rodriguez was running in the stands around 8 a.m. as part of his workout program. ... LHP Andy Pettitte threw batting practice. He will take part in a simulated game on Sunday.
