Padres, 1B Gonzalez agree to four-year extension

Apr 1, 2007 - 9:41 PM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Adrian Gonzalez has found a home.

Gonzalez shored up his future Sunday, agreeing to terms with the San Diego Padres on a four-year contract extension.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal includes a club option for 2011.

The first overall selection in the 2000 draft by the Florida Marlins, Gonzalez enjoyed a breakthrough 2006 campaign in his first year with the Padres, batting .304 with a team-leading 24 homers and 82 RBI.

"Adrian has established himself as one of the great young players in the game and is a key component to our ballclub," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. "We are excited he's going to be in a Padres uniform for many years to come, not only because he's a quality player but also a quality person."

Acquired in a six-player deal with the Texas Rangers in January 2006, the 24-year-old first baseman is a career .285 hitter with 31 homers in parts of three seasons with San Diego and Texas.
