Report: MLB to award 2013 All-Star Game to Mets

May 15, 2012 - 10:28 PM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Major League Baseball is set to award the 2013 All-Star Game to the New York Mets, according to the New York Times.

The game will be played at Citi Field in Flushing, which opened as the home of the Mets for the 2009 season.

Major League Baseball and the Mets, along with the City of New York, announced a press conference for Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. (et), but the subject wasn't revealed. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to attend, as well as the Mets principal owner Fred Wilpon and Bud Selig, commissioner of Baseball.

The Mets were expected to be awarded the game after the Yankees hosted the 2008 All-Star Game, the last year both the old Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium were open.

This will be the second time in team history the Mets will host the game. The first was in 1964 -- Shea Stadium's inaugural season.

Citi Field will also play host to the pre-All-Star Game festivities. The Sunday before the game, there will be a Futures Game featuring the brightest prospects from around the league as well as a celebrity softball event.

The day before the game will feature a workout for all players involved and in the evening, the ever-popular Home Run Derby is held. The 2013 All-Star Game will be held on a Tuesday night.
