Mets selected to host 2013 All-Star Game

May 16, 2012 - 4:13 PM New York, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Mets have been selected to host the 2013 All-Star Game.

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig unveiled Citi Field as the site of the 2013 event on Wednesday. The 84th All-Star Game is scheduled to be played on Tuesday, July 16.

"As we celebrate the franchise's golden anniversary this year, I am pleased to award the 2013 All-Star Game to the New York Mets and their loyal fans," Selig said. "We are delighted to bring the Midsummer Classic to Citi Field, a wonderful ballpark that has carried on the remarkable National League tradition in New York City. The Mets will be superb hosts to next summer's greatest sporting event."

The Mets have hosted the Midsummer Classic one other time, in 1964, the inaugural year of Shea Stadium. The National League won that contest 7-4, thanks to a three-run walk-off homer by the Phillies' Johnny Callison.

This year's All-Star Game will be played at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, the first time the Royals are holding the event since 1973.

With Wednesday's announcement, the Los Angeles Dodgers now become the team with the longest active hosting drought (1980).
