Tigers RHP Verlander named AL Player of the Week

Jun 18, 2007 - 8:08 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Detroit Tigers righthander Justin Verlander was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday.

Verlander became the sixth player in Tigers' history to pitch a no-hitter by shutting out the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. He struck out 12 and issued four walks.

The 24-year-old followed that performance by beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-4, on Sunday, giving up three runs in six innings.

The reigning American League rookie of the year is now 8-2 with a 2.90 ERA this season.
