Padres activate OF Giles from disabled list

Jun 28, 2007 - 8:50 PM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres on Thursday activated veteran outfielder Brian Giles from the 15-day disabled list.

The 36-year-old Giles has been sidelined since May 20 with a right knee contusion.

Giles is hitting .276 (47-for-170) with one homer, 12 RBI and 23 runs scored this season. This week, he has been on a short rehab assignment, playing three games for Class A Lake Elsinore, hitting .400 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.

The former Pittsburgh Pirate has a career average of .294 with 261 home runs, 953 RBI and 973 runs scored in 13 seasons. In a corresponding roster move, the Padres optioned righthander Mike Thompson to Class AAA Portland.

The 26-year-old's stay with the big team was brief. He was only recalled from Portland prior to Wednesday's game against the San Francisco Giants. This season, he is 0-1 with a 7.84 ERA in 10 1/3 innings for San Diego.

The Padres also made a move for their future Thursday, agreeing to terms with lefthander Nick Schmidt, the team's first-round draft pick this year.

The 23rd overall selection, Schmidt was a second-team All-American this past season after going 11-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 18 starts for Arkansas.

The 6-5, 230-pound Schmidt is Arkansas' all-time leader in strikeouts with 345 and also is among the school's top-10 career leaders in wins (28), innings (340 1/3), starts (52) and ERA (2.83).
