Yankees 3B Rodriguez named AL Player of the Month
Jul 2, 2007 - 9:16 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez on Monday was named American League Player of the Month for June.The Yankees slugger batted .406 (39-for-96) with nine home runs, 34 RBI and 28 runs in 27 games last month.
The two-time A.L. Most Valuable Player also walked 18 times and posted a .500 on-base percentage in June.
Rodriguez, who also earned this honor for the month of April, is batting .327 this season with a league-leading 28 home runs and 79 RBI. This is the ninth time - fifth as a Yankee - that the 31-year-old All-Star has received the award.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim third baseman Chone Figgins finished second in the voting after batting .461 with 53 hits, 23 runs and 14 stolen bases. He highlighted his month with a 6-for-6 game on June 18 in a win over the Houston Astros.
Other players considered for the award were All-Star Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners, All-Star Victor Martinez of the Cleveland Indians, Orlando Cabrera of the Angels, Marlon Byrd of the Texas Rangers, All-Star Magglio Ordonez of the Detroit Tigers and his teammate Carlos Guillen.
