Marlins SS Ramirez named NL Player of Week

Jul 11, 2007 - 9:04 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez was named the National League Player of the Week on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Ramirez had 12 hits, three home runs and six RBI with a .560 on-base percentage last week.

It was the first career weekly honor for Ramirez, who posted his third career two-homer game and first of the season during a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. In a 7-2 victory against the Dodgers on Saturday, he went 4-for-4 with two doubles.

The reigning NL Rookie of the Year, Ramirez is batting .331 with 14 homers, 35 RBI and 27 steals this season.

Other candidates receiving consideration were Kevin Gregg of the Marlins, Ted Lilly of the Chicago Cubs, Hunter Pence of the Houston Astros, Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers, Adam LaRoche of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pat Burrell of the Philadelphia Phillies and Garrett Atkins of the Colorado Rockies.
