Giants' Vogelsong fractures right hand
May 21, 2013 - 5:39 AM San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - San Francisco Giants right-hander Ryan Vogelsong was in the midst of his best start of the season Monday, but sustained a fractured right hand in the bottom of the fifth inning after taking a fastball off his throwing hand while swinging at a pitch.Vogelsong scattered three hits and a walk over five scoreless frames against the Washington Nationals before swinging at an inside fastball that caught him flush on his pitching hand in the home half of the fifth.
Vogelsong was unable to finish the at-bat, as pinch-hitter Nick Noonan replaced him and grounded out to end the inning.
The 35-year-old veteran earned the victory for his effort, as the bullpen finished off the Giants' 8-0 shutout, but the news was all bad for Vogelsong after the game.
"He's got two breaks in the right hand there." Giants manager Bruce Bochy confirmed after the game. "He's going to go in tomorrow and have surgery. More than likely you're looking at four-to-six weeks."
Vogelsong entered Monday's start with a 1-4 record and an 8.06 earned run average over eight starts.
No one has shouted yet.
