Rockies deal OF Young to Mets

Jun 19, 2013 - 3:56 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Mets acquired outfielder Eric Young Jr. from the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Collin McHugh Tuesday in a trade of players recently designated for assignment.

Young was removed from the Rockies' 40-man roster last week after hitting just .242 with one home run and eight stolen bases in 57 games. The speedy switch- hitter batted .316 with four homers and 14 steals in a utility role last season, however, and owns a career .261 average with 70 steals in 313 major league games.

McHugh was designated for assignment by the Mets on Saturday after allowing eight earned runs in seven innings over three appearances at the big league level. The 25-year-old is 0-5 with an 8.26 ERA over 11 career games, including five starts, in the majors.

The Mets designated outfielder Collin Cowgill for assignment to make room for Young on the active roster. The 27-year-old hit just .173 with two homers and eight RBI in 52 at-bats with New York this season.
