Padres give Gyorko six-year extension
Apr 14, 2014 - 9:06 PM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres have agreed on a six- year extension with second baseman Jedd Gyorko.Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but multiple sources say the pact is worth $35 million with an option for a seventh year.
"Jedd is a homegrown player in his fifth season with the Padres organization and has been a consistent performer every step of the way," Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said. "He has shown us a real commitment to this organization and to the city of San Diego."
As a rookie last season, Gyorko hit .249 and led the team with 23 homers and 63 RBI despite missing 30 games with a groin injury. San Diego selected Gyorko in the second round of the 2010 amateur draft out of West Virginia.
His 23 home runs were the third most in Major League history by a rookie second baseman, behind only Dan Uggla, who hit 27 for the Marlins in 2006 and Joe Gordon, who hit 25 for the Yankees in 1938.
In 43 at-bats this season, Gyorko is hitting just .167 with a homer and seven RBI.
