Yankees place Cervelli on 60-day DL
Apr 15, 2014 - 5:09 PM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees placed catcher Francisco Cervelli on the 60-day disabled list Tuesday with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain.Cervelli suffered the injury while beating out a potential double-play grounder in Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The play was originally ruled a double play, but a video review reversed the call and gave the Yankees their decisive run in a 3-2 victory.
Over five games this season, Cervelli is batting just .188 with one RBI. He won the backup job with a strong spring that featured a .405 batting average and four homers over 15 games in Florida.
Cervelli was limited to just 17 games last season. He fractured his right hand on a foul tip early in the season, then served a 50-game suspension as part of the Biogenesis scandal.
The Yankees recalled catcher John Ryan Murphy from Triple-A Scranton to replace Cervelli on the roster. New York also selected the contract of infielder Scott Sizemore from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the roster spot of right-handed pitcher Shane Greene, who was optioned to Scranton on Monday.
