Mets call up Bobby Abreu

Apr 21, 2014 - 7:25 PM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets selected the contract of veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday.

Abreu, who last played in the majors in 2012, spent spring training with the Philadelphia Phillies, but was released by the team on March 27 after failing to make the club's Opening Day roster.

The Mets then signed the 40-year-old outfielder four days later and optioned him to Las Vegas, where he batted .395 with four doubles, one home run and nine runs batted in over 15 games.

In 2012, Abreu hit .242 with three homers and 24 RBI over 100 combined games with the Angels and Dodgers.

The two-time All Star is a career .292 hitter with 287 homers and 1,349 RBI in 2,347 games over 17 seasons with the Astros, Phillies, Yankees, Angels and Dodgers.

To make room on the roster, New York optioned outfielder Andrew Brown to Las Vegas.

Brown, 29, batted .185 with one homer and five RBI over 10 games with the Mets this season.
