Giants promote 2B Uggla

Jul 25, 2014 - 11:16 PM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants placed infielders Ehire Adrianza and Marco Scutaro on the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday's series opener against the Dodgers and promoted second baseman Dan Uggla from Triple-A Fresno.

Uggla, a three-time All-Star, signed a minor league deal with the Giants on Monday, three days after he was released by the Atlanta Braves.

Uggla's mostly disappointing tenure with Atlanta came to a close last Friday, less than a week after the team suspended the struggling veteran for its final game prior to the All-Star break for arriving late to a game.

The 34-year-old will start at second base and bat seventh in Friday's game.

The Giants also added infielder Tony Abreu from Fresno.

Adrianza injured his right hamstring in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Phillies, and Scutaro heads back to the DL with a strained lower back. Scutaro, 38, has played just five games this season.

To make room on the active roster, San Francisco designated pitcher Jose De Paula and infielder Nick Noonan for assignment.
