Yankees DFA Roberts

Aug 1, 2014 - 8:46 PM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees designated veteran second baseman Brian Roberts for assignment on Friday.

The club also optioned infielder Zelous Wheeler and outfielder Zoilo Almonte to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The moves opened roster spots for infielders Martin Prado and Stephen Drew, who were acquired in separate deals with Arizona and Boston before Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline, and pitcher Esmil Rogers, who was claimed off waivers from Toronto.

Roberts, 36, batted .237 with five home runs and 21 RBI in 91 games with the Yankees this season.
