Marlins' Stanton won't play again in 2014

Sep 17, 2014 - 10:24 PM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins announced on Wednesday that star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton will not play again this season.

Stanton was struck on the left side of his face by a Mike Fiers fastball on Sept. 11 in Milwaukee and suffered multiple facial fractures, dental damage and needed stitches to close cuts on his face. He avoided surgery and was discharged from the hospital.

There was a chance that Stanton could return to the lineup before the end of the regular season, but after team doctors examined him in Miami on Tuesday, it was determined that he needed more time to heal.

The 24-year-old slugger was having an MVP-caliber season for the Marlins, despite the team's struggles. Stanton was batting .288 with 37 home runs and a career-high 105 runs batted in. He currently leads the National League in homers, extra-base hits (69), slugging percentage (.555) and OPS (.950).

Stanton is said to be recovering and has a positive outlook on the situation, sharing his appreciation for fan support on twitter.

"The amount of support I have received from you guys has been tremendous & Heartfelt. I'm much better today & deeply appreciate your prayers," he wrote on Sept. 12.

On Tuesday, Stanton shared a picture of his progress with the message, "The Aftermath ... Making huge progress!! Want to thank everyone who has played a part in my recovery..."

Stanton is expected to make a full recovery and will be ready to participate in Spring Training.
