Marital infidelity led to Washington's resignation

Sep 18, 2014 - 7:29 PM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Former Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said marital infidelity led to his resignation earlier this month.

Washington resigned on Sept. 5 and cited an "off-the-field personal matter" as his reason at the time. He held a news conference Thursday at a Dallas hotel to address the situation further.

"I was not true to my wife," said Washington. "After 42 years, I broke her trust. I'm here today to own that mistake and to apologize to her and to those I disappointed."

The 62-year-old Washington did not discuss details during his apology. His wife, Gerry, was seated nearby.

"I'm sorry for breaking the trust that I had with my wife," Washington added. "And for disappointing my players, disappointing my coaches, disappointing Major League Baseball and disappointing the Texas Rangers."

Washington had been the Rangers' skipper since the start of the 2007 season and left with the club just 53-87, the worst mark in any of his seven-plus years at the helm.

The Rangers were 664-611 under Washington and won back-to-back AL pennants in 2010 and '11.

Tim Bogar was named interim manager after Washington's departure.
