Padres, Cabrera part ways

Dec 3, 2014 - 2:04 PM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera is now a free agent after the team declined to offer him a contract for the 2014 season.

Cabrera only appeared in 90 games last season for the Padres and hit just .232 after making the All-Star Game in 2013. He, of course, was also suspended 50 games that season for his connection to the Biogenesis clinic accused of supplying performance-enhancing drugs

The 28-year-old also ran into some legal problems late last season when he was arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana. Cabrera faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail if convicted of the misdemeanor.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in San Diego on Monday.

Cabrera wasn't the only former National League All-Star to hit the free agent market, as the Pittsburgh Pirates chose not offer a contract to first baseman Gaby Sanchez.

Also, infielders Gordon Beckham, Justin Smoak and Daniel Descalso, as well as outfielders Eric Young Jr., John Mayberry Jr., Andy Dirks and Kyle Blanks were not offered deals, as were left-hander Wade LeBlanc and righty Logan Ondrusek.
