Marlins acquire Latos from Cincy
Dec 11, 2014 - 8:32 PM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins have acquired oft- injured right-hander Mat Latos from the Cincinnati Reds for a pair of minor leaguers. It was the second deal of the day for the Reds, who also shipped starting pitcher Alfredo Simon to the Detroit Tigers.
When healthy Latos has been as good as any pitcher in the National League, but staying on the field has been a problem. Last year he was felled by not only a knee injury, but an elbow issue that caused him to miss the first two and a half months of the season.
Latos, though, pitched well a year ago going 5-5 with a 3.25 ERA in 16 starts before shutting it down in September due to a bone bruise in his elbow.
Since being acquired by the Reds in a trade with San Diego in December of 2011, Latos has put together a 33-16 record and a 3.31 ERA over 81 starts. He also holds the Reds' club record for most consecutive starts without a defeat, going 21 straight outings without a loss from August 29, 2012 to June 13, 2013; he was 10-0 with a 2.80 ERA over that span.
In 2010, Latos established a major league record by allowing two runs or less in 15 consecutive starts , breaking the record of 14, formerly shared by Hall- of-Famer Greg Maddux and Mike Scott.
The players going to Cincinnati in the deal are 24-year-old righty Anthony DeSclafani, who has pitched to a 3.23 ERA over 73 games (65 starts) at the minor league level, and catcher Chad Wallach.
