Blue Jays RHP Marcum to have knee surgery

Sep 23, 2007 - 6:18 PM BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Shaun Marcum had his strong season come to an end on Sunday.

The Toronto Blue Jays righthander will undergo season-ending knee surgery to repair a torn MCL in his right knee.

The surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, and will sideline him for no more than six weeks.

Marcum, 25, was forced to leave the third inning of Saturday's 12-11 extra-inning loss to the New York Yankees after aggravating a nagging injury that first showed up in his previous outing.

The tear put an abrupt halt to a strong second season for Marcum, who is 12-6 with a 4.13 ERA in 38 appearances - 25 starts.

After beginning the season in the bullpen, Marcum has become a key member of the Blue Jays rotation following the All-Star break, going 8-3 with a 4.68 ERA in 14 starts.
