Red Sox DH Ortiz named AL Player of the Month

Oct 2, 2007 - 6:28 AM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz on Monday was named American League Player of the Month.

Ortiz batted .396 (36-for-91) with nine homers and 27 RBI in 26 games.

He led the AL with a .824 slugging percentage and had 21 extra-base hits and 24 walks. The All-Star slugger recorded at least three hits in a game for three straight games from September 26-28.

Ortiz ends the season with a .332 average, 35 home runs and 117 RBI while leading the majors with a .445 on-base percentage.

It is the third time Ortiz has won a monthly award, previously being honored in September 2005 and July 2006.
