Brewers P Smith ejected for foreign substance
May 22, 2015 - 3:34 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brewers pitcher Will Smith was ejected in the seventh inning of Thursday's game against Atlanta for having a foreign substance on his arm.Smith had come on in relief of starter Matt Garza in the seventh with one out and men on the corners.
He hit Pedro Ciriaco with a pitch before umpires, prompted by Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, approached Smith on the mound. Crew chief Jim Joyce felt Smith's forearm and signaled for him to leave the game.
It appeared the left-hander had a shiny substance, possibly pine tar, on his right forearm.
After the game, Smith stated that he had put sunscreen and rosin on his forearm before warming up in the bullpen and forgot to wipe it off before entering the game.
"It was chilly and kind of windy," said Smith. "I had rosin and sunscreen on my arm. I just forgot to wipe it off before I went out and pitched. I had to kind of get ready in a hurry. I just forgot. That's it."
No one has shouted yet.
