Tigers' Sheffield jams finger

Apr 3, 2008 - 9:49 PM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Detroit Tigers designated hitter Gary Sheffield jammed a finger in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals, according to manager Jim Leyland.

Leyland did not specify which finger but said Sheffield suffered the injury when he was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double in the eighth inning.

"He would not have been able to hit coming around to him that last inning," Leyland said. "I don't know serious it is but he couldn't bend it. I don't know exactly what the situation is."

The Tigers, who were swept in the three-game series, have been hit by a series of injuries early in the season.

Third baseman Miguel Cabrera was scratched from Thursday's lineup due to soreness in his left quadriceps.

Acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Florida Marlins this offseason, Cabrera has been bothered by tightness in his quad since spring training.

Detroit already is without starting center fielder Curtis Granderson, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured metacarpal bone in his right hand.
