Sheffield to sit with sore finger

Apr 4, 2008 - 4:59 PM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Detroit Tigers designated hitter Gary Sheffield was scratched from Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox with a torn tendon in his right ring finger.

He is listed as day-to-day.

Sheffield jammed the finger during Thursday's 4-1 setback to the Kansas City Royals and it continued to swell overnight.

"I feel OK. You don't need the tip of your finger, really, to hit," Sheffield old MLB.com "But right now, because of the swelling it's a little sore. But once we get the swelling down, it could be a day or two."

"I think he'll be fine," Tigers manager Jim Leyland added. "I don't think it's a big deal."

Sheffield is 1-for-7 (.143) with one RBI over the first three games of the season for the winless Tigers.
