MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo will undergo knee surgery Tuesday.
The operation will repair Gallardo's torn right ACL and likely will end the promising righthander's season.
Gallardo suffered the injury running to cover first base against the Chicago Cubs on May 1. He had hoped to avoid surgery, something that evidently is no longer a possibility.
"I wish I was talking about my performances," Gallardo told reporters Sunday.
Gallardo, 22, began the season on the disabled list after undergoing surgery to remove cartilage in his left knee prior to spring training.
Gallardo has made three starts this season, posting a 1.80 ERA without recording a decision. He went 9-5 with a 3.87 ERA in 2007.
The Brewers have struggled since Gallardo's injury, losing seven of their last nine games.
"If you look at our rotation, we need to get more production out of our starting pitching," manager Ned Yost told the Brewers' official web site. "If you take (Ben Sheets) out of it, the earned run average is over 6.00."
