Guillen named AL Player of the Week

May 19, 2008 - 6:07 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Kansas City Royals outfielder Jose Guillen on Monday was named American League Player of the Week.

Known for his hot temper, Guillen took out his frustrations on pitchers last week, batting .458 (11-for-24) with two homers and 13 RBI. During the week in which he celebrated his 32nd birthday, Guillen also posted a .917 slugging percentage to go along with a .480 on-base percentage.

Guillen is batting .245 with five homers and 30 RBI this season.

Also considered for the award were Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder Garret Anderson, Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau. Pitchers who received consideration were Fausto Carmona of the Cleveland Indians and Edwin Jackson of the Tampa Bay Rays.
