Rockies place Barmes, Hawpe on DL

May 24, 2008 - 6:36 PM DENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Rockies on Saturday placed infielder Clint Barmes and outfielder Brad Hawpe on the 15-day disabled list.

Barmes, who is hitting .343 with five homers and 20 RBI in 39 games this season, suffered a sprained right knee in the 10th inning of Friday's 6-5, 13-inning victory over the New York Mets.

Battling a right hamstring strain, Hawpe was placed on the DL retroactive to Wednesday. He is hitting just .231 with three homers and 17 RBI this season.

To replace Barmes and Hawpe, the Rockies recalled infielder Ian Stewart and outfielder Seth Smith from Class AAA Colorado Springs.

One of the organization's top prospects, the 23-year-old Stewart was batting .281 with 12 homers and 43 RBI in 46 games for the Sky Sox.

Smith, 25, was hitting .321 with six homers and 30 RBI in 45 contests at Colorado Springs.
