Kemp, Torrealba penalized for fight

Jun 5, 2008 - 4:36 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp and Colorado Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba have been suspended for their involvement in Tuesday's benches-clearing fight, Major League baseball announced Thursday.

Kemp was suspended four games and fined an undisclosed financial amount for his involvement in the altercation, which took place after he struck out to end the eighth inning.

Swinging at a ball in the dirt, Kemp was left leaning toward first base when Torrealba went to tag him out after failing to catch the pitch cleanly.

Frustrated by the strikeout and what he thought was a hard tag, Kemp pushed Torrealba, who immediately pushed back before both players ended up tackling each other to the ground, leading to both benches emptying.

Torrealba was suspended three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his actions.

Unless appealed, Kemp's suspension is scheduled to begin later Thursday when the Dodgers open a four-game series with the Chicago Cubs.

The suspension for Torrealba could start Friday, when the Rockies host the Milwaukee Brewers, unless he decides to appeal.
