Guillen leaves game after driving in seven runs

Jun 7, 2008 - 11:22 PM BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Kansas City Royals right fielder Jose Guillen hit two home runs and matched a franchise record with seven RBI in Saturday's 12-11 loss to the New York Yankees - and he did not even finish the game.

After hitting a grand slam in the top of the seventh that gave the Royals a 10-6 lead, Guillen was replaced in right field by Mark Teahen to start the bottom of the inning.

Guillen was lifted partly for defensive reasons, but also because of swelling in his left shin. An inning earlier, he fouled a ball hard off the shin bone.

"We felt like we were in a position to go ahead and get him off (the shin), ice it and hopefully reduce the swelling," Royals manager Trey Hillman said. "We wanted him in better condition for tomorrow's day game."

With Guillen on the bench, the Yankees rallied from their second four-run deficit of the day to beat the Royals on Johnny Damon's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. It was Damon's sixth hit, tying an American League record.

"We went ahead and made the switch, and unfortunately, we gave up our second four-run lead," Hillman said.
