Mets LF Alou back on DL
Jun 13, 2008 - 9:37 PM FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- It took just one game for Moises Alou to land back on the sidelines.Alou, who returned from a left calf injury on Tuesday, was placed back on the 15-day disabled list Friday with the same injury.
The oldest player in the major leagues, the 41-year-old Alou experienced tightness in his calf during Tuesday's 9-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks after being activated from the DL earlier in the day. He did not return to the game following a 61-minute rain delay and felt worse on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Alou reported no improvement and believed a return to the DL for a third time this year was likely.
"I just feel sore," Alou told the Mets' web site Thursday. "I think the DL is a possibility because I'm feeling like I'm very sore to walk."
Alou has appeared in just 15 games this season, batting .347 (17-for-49) with no home runs and nine RBI. Since signing with the team prior to the 2007 campaign, he has played just 45 percent of New York's contests due to injuries.
The loss of Alou leaves the Mets with just one healthy regular outfielder in center fielder Carlos Beltran. Right fielder Ryan Church was placed on the DL on Tuesday as he still is feeling the effects of a concussion sustained on May 20 in Atlanta.
To replace Alou on the roster, New York recalled catcher Robinson Cancel from Class AAA New Orleans. Cancel made one previous appearance for the Mets this season, going 0-for-1 in a 2-1 loss to San Diego on June 6.
New York also announced infielder Abraham Nunez and catcher Raul Casanova cleared waivers and accepted assignments to New Orleans.
No one has shouted yet.
