Cubs RHP Zambrano leaves game

Jun 19, 2008 - 3:28 AM ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- Chicago Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano left Wednesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with discomfort in his pitching shoulder.

Zambrano will return to Chicago on Thursday to see team orthopedist Stephen Gryzlo. He also will have an MRI exam.

After throwing one ball to Eric Hinske with two out in the seventh, Cubs manager Lou Piniella and the team trainer visited Zambrano on the mound.

"He had discomfort and we had to get him out," Piniella said. "That's all we know."

The portly righthander indicated he wanted to stay in the game, but Piniella removed him in favor of Neal Cotts.

"He tried to talk me into staying," Piniella said. "He was convincing. We just hope for the best."

Zambrano (8-3) allowed seven hits, five runs (four earned), four walks and struck out two in remaining winless since June 2.

"I felt something, but I feel good," Zambrano said. "I don't think I'll miss my next start. I hope not."
