Cardinals place SS Izturis on DL

Jun 22, 2008 - 6:38 PM BOSTON (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals placed shortstop Cesar Izturis on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a strained right hamstring.

Izturis was pulled after suffering the injury in the fourth inning of Friday's game against the Boston Red Sox. He has played in 67 contests this season, batting .241 with a homer and 12 RBI.

The Cardinals also purchased the contract of outfielder Nick Stavinoha from Class AAA Memphis of the Pacific Coast League. Stavinoha is in Sunday's starting lineup as the Cardinals' designated hitter and will be the ninth St. Louis player to make his major league debut this season.

Drafted by the Cardinals in 2005, the 26-year-old Stavinoha batted .346 with 10 home runs, 50 RBI and a .519 slugging percentage at Memphis.

To make room for him on the 40-man roster, St. Louis transferred righthander Chris Carpenter from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list.
