Cubs recall LHP Marshall

Jun 24, 2008 - 11:46 PM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs on Tuesday recalled lefthander Sean Marshall from Class AAA Iowa of the Pacific Coast League.

Marshall, 25, who is slated to make the start for Chicago in an interleague game against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, collected a save and a 4.15 ERA in 13 relief appearances for the Cubs after being called up the first time on April 9.

The southpaw, who is making his first start since last September, takes the place of Carlos Zambrano, who was placed on the 15-day disabled last Thursday with a strained right shoulder. Overall, Marshall is 13-17 with a 4.81 ERA over three seasons with Chicago.

In addition, the Cubs placed outfielder Reed Johnson on the 15-day disabled list - retroactive to June 18 - with lower back spasms, activated infielder Daryle Ward from the 15-day disabled list and optioned infielder Micah Hoffpauir to Iowa.

The 31-year-old Johnson was hitting .271 with three homers and 31 RBI in 56 games for Chicago after signing with the club on March 25 as a free agent.

Ward, who turns 33 on Friday, was batting .200 (5-for-25) with a home run and six RBI in 30 games for the Cubs before being placed on the disabled list on May 18 with a bulging disc in his lower back.

Hoffpauir, 28, who was hitting .400 (14-for-35) with eight runs score in 18 games in two stints with Chicago, also batted .306 with three homers and 15 RBI in 16 games for Iowa.
